Winter reflections of Mt Taranaki, Pouakai Range, Egmont National Park

The Pouakai Range offers one of the best views of nearby Mt Taranaki, unlike most tracks on Mt Taranaki itself which are too close to the summit to offer a truly grandstand view. The Pouakai Circuit, a 25 km loop track taking in the Pouakai Range and the northern slopes of Mt Taranaki, has recently been upgraded and is now one of the most popular tracks in the Taranaki region, offering trampers a superb subalpine experience including stunning views of the main cone of Mt Taranaki from the Pouakai Range.

This vista is especially stunning in midwinter, when Mt Taranaki is blanketed with snow and the air is particularly crisp and clear. This photograph was taken late on a midwinter morning within a few days of a recent cold snap, providing for a stunning wintry view of one of New Zealand’s best-known mountains.
